Overview
A hatchback version of the X3, the X4 is a four-door “coupe,” with a low roof and a nicer cabin—particularly in the back seat. Engine choices are a 240-hp turbo four, a 300-hp turbo six, and for the Xtra-est of Xs, there is the M40i with 355 hp, launch control, bigger front brake discs, 19-inch wheels, and a sport-tuned suspension. All X4s have an eight-speed automatic transmission and torque-vectoring all-wheel drive. Driving dynamics are excellent; these are BMWs, after all.

Walkaround
The relationship between the new BMW X4 and its more useful X3 brother is understandable. The X4 shares the X3’s wheelbase, its dashboard, and even its hood. Lopping 2.2 inches off the roofline doesn’t deprive front-seat passengers of much headroom, but costs those in the rear 1.7 inches of it. Taller occupants will care, but those nearer the middle of the human-factors bell curve won’t. Powertrain choices are limited in the X4 compared with the X3. But buyers have already made their choice, and it is lightheartedness. There’s no rear-drive model, and while a diesel would have fit nicely with the X4 theme by asset of costing more, its increased efficiency would have made it a more practical version of a less practical version of a car nobody needs, so BMW wisely chose not to confuse the issue any further. All-wheel drive is standard, as is an eight-speed automatic; drivetrain choice is limited to the four-cylinder X4 xDrive28i and the six-pot X4 xDrive35i.

Summary
Aficionados fluent in BMW nomenclature can tell right off the bat that the M40i is a hot-rodded version of the segment-defying X4 that was developed to hit the track with input from the Munich-based car maker’s M division. The most important upgrades are consequently found by peeking in the engine bay, where the X4 gains a newly developed turbocharged, 3.0-liter straight-six engine that makes 355 horsepower from 5,800-6,000 rpm and 343 pound-feet of torque over a broad range that stretches from 1,350-5,250 rpm.
