2015 BMW 4-Series Review
The BMW 3-series has four doors, and the 4-series has two doors. Usually. More or less. The 435i Gran Coupe is like a 4-series two-door Coupe except that it comes in a five-door hatchback configuration with a slope-y silhouette and a lot more room inside. If you want to be overly simplistic, it's a four-door 4-series hatchback. Some would simply say it's a 3-series hatchback that is not the GT. It's not a Sport Activity Vehicle like the five-door X4, but neither is it a simple 4-series four-door or a 3-series Gran Turismo. The body is more shapely, more “appealing,” BMW says, while its somewhat more airy dimensions add a dose of practicality without being so practical that you would need to call it a sport-utility vehicle or a wagon, all of which are out there in the BMW lineup.

U.S. 4-series Gran Coupes will get a choice of two engines: The 428i gets a 240-hp 2.0-liter turbo four while the 435i will get the 300-hp 3.0-liter turbo inline six. The 428i xDrive Gran Coupe with the 2.0-liter turbo four will be in showrooms in September with BMW's intelligent all-wheel-drive system. Both four- and six-cylinder engines come mated to eight-speed automatics. Any 3- or 4-series anything is fun to drive, and this is no exception. We just now got in from a spirited morning of driving on superb Spanish country back roads in a 428i Gran Coupe with the M Sport package, and it's hard to wipe the loooonng grin off our slobbering grille. Oozing through city traffic, the 4 is perfectly comfortable. This car would no doubt make a great daily driver in even the lousiest urban jungle. But given the right road and a skilled driver, such as yourself, it really comes alive. By cranking it up to the highest of the four Driving Dynamics Control settings – the Sport+ that sits above Eco, Comfort and mere Sport – and hammering on the throttle, the car felt like a performance sedan. In the dry, we could never coax understeer from the chassis. When a little rain started falling, we only managed to get oversteer once, when a sudden lift of the throttle upon entering a hairpin was immediately followed by an even more sudden throttle application. In that case, the Driving Dynamics Control allowed quite a bit of tail wag. The rest of the time, we couldn't get the Bridgestone Potenza S001s to so much as chirp. The four-wheel disc brakes never faded despite hard hammering. In Sport+, the shifts cracked off with a bang, and the electric power steering got even more precise.

Even though we had the smaller engine, we never felt the car was underpowered. Peak output of 240 hp between 5,000 and 6,500 seems a little weak on paper, but on the road, it was fun. We found ourselves shifting just over 6,000 revs and never needed more power the whole day. BMW quotes a 0-60 time of 5.7 seconds, which is not bad considering the car weighs 3,610 pounds. Sheesh. With so many model variations in the 3- and 4-Series lineups, there has to be something here that floats your particular boat. Or with a starting price of $41,225, and to which you could easily add another 10 grand in options, maybe it'll float your yacht.BMW claims this is made to compete against the Audi A5 Sportback, which is not sold in the States, but maybe you could line it up against the Porsche Macan. You could say it sort of competes against the Acura RDX, too.
